For the first time in 28 years the CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Championship is venturing across the border into Scotland and all the drivers are looking forward to tackling the challenging Knockhill circuit in both directions over the weekend.
Following a very successful meeting at Donington, the three Subaru powered Sakers are out again chasing overall honours at Knockhill, though perhaps they will not be nimble enough for such an easy time! Paul Rose who leads Class A from Steve Harris, will be hungry for his sixth class and overall win of the season. The third slightly less powerful (but more colourful) Saker of David Clark will probably have his hands full with Andy Bicknell’s Ginetta G50 and the lovely TVR Tuscan of Guy Carter.
Some of the Class B competitors with their more nimble cars will be challenging for overall honours. In particular look out for local ‘boy’ Roddie Paterson in his Caterham C400 and certainly not local, Luke Armiger in his Vauxhall Tigra. Luke, who received the 2020 Driver of the Year trophy at Donington has travelled from the South coast! In addition to these two watch out for Paul Dobson in his class leading, fire breathing, sideways Locost 7 and Jon Woolfitt’s immaculate Spire.
Moving into the Modified class, within the larger of them the top two in the class are both entered for this penultimate meeting of the championship. Ric Walker leads the class in his BMW Mini JCW from Garry Wardle in his TCR Seat Cupra. Both have had three class wins this year and are virtually together on points (if you take account of Garry having played his Joker which doubles the points won at a selected round). Sponsor Ric Wood in his fabulous Nissan RB26 is entered but may not venture out.
Class E sees championship leader Jamie Cryer out in his lovely Ginetta G20, ready to continue hi yearlong battle with the pristine Citroen Xsara of Paul Rotheroe. Jamie currently leads the championship overall but will have to take as many points as possible to retain the title as the fight at the top of the table is as close as I can remember. Graeme Smith leads class F (having moved to second overall having received 3 points for a day’s marshalling at the Oulton Park Gold Cup) with his Mazda MX5. With some judicious playing of his joker Graeme can seriously challenge for overall honours, though lack of starters in his class may count against him. Bruce Carter in his Honda Civic will be out to take points away from Graeme as he has in previous rounds.
If you can venture into the Paddock pop along to meet the drivers as they all love to talk about their cars and exploits this season.
