A new year, a new season and a new class for Super Lap Scotland powered by Rockstar Energy Drink for 2019 with the introduction of the all-new Class G. Can Class F winner and 2018 King of the Hill Martin Brown defend his two titles… there’s lots of new competition to contend with so let’s see how the Class E, F and G competitors faired in Round 1.
E Class
Traditionally one of the most competitive classes in SLS and 2019 looks no different with retuning Champion Martin Brown back to defend his Class and King of the Hill title win from 2018. There are some new cars and new people with a double entry from the Cowie household (Natalie and Suzanne) adding to Keith in Class B – making the Knockhill SLS events a real family affair.
However, back to the action and it was Ewan Fraser who set the early pace in his Ginetta G40R. Euan Begbie, out in a Renault Clio 182 for 2019 finished in second place in practice and backed that up with a P3 in both qualifying and the final. It was Brown who took the win however, driving his beefed-up Subaru to a blistering lap time of 58.743 seconds in the final ahead of Fraser in P2. Keep your eyes on this class in 2019, McEleny, Smith and McDougall will all be out to hunt down those podium slots in 2019.
F Class
One of the biggest classes at Round 1 for Super Lap Scotland powered by Rockstar Energy Drink which saw 14 competitors out on track through practice, qualifying and the finals. A nice mix of new faces coming up against some veteran SLS’ers in this class with the addition of some new vehicles taking on the tried and trusted Renault Clios and Minis.
A familiar face was the man on form over the course of the day. Paul Bell was the man out front topping the time sheets in his Renault Clip Cup car after adding additional ballast to the car to make the cut for Class F. However, Marc Kemp, Alex Fulton and Kevin Strachan kept him honest throughout. Word on the street is that Bell will move to Class E for Round 2 – which should give further spark to some strong competition in Class F for the remainder of the season.
G Class
Eight drivers lined up on the starting grid for the all-new Class G Championship for 2019. Serial SLS competitor, Adam Kindness swapped his super-fast Subaru for a Mini Cooper whilst the returning pairing of Michael Anderson and Ray McGinlay would once again share the Ford Puma.
Throughout the day the competition was stiff, with 0.4secs separating the top three in the final run off. In the end Kindness came out on top ahead of McGinlay and Anderson with Adam Morrison who had flirted with the podium rounding out the day in fourth.
