Fast-charging young gun David Bogie from Dumfries clawed back 20 seconds in the closing two stages of the Aberdeen-based Granite City Rally to bag maximum points in the race for the County Saab Scottish Rally Championship.
But the talented youngster, who dropped almost a minute when his Toyota Corolla World Rally Car suffered a puncture in the second stage, pipped his nearest rival Jimmy Girvan only as a result of a tiebreaker.
After 45 miles of high speed action through the Grampian forests, the two drivers clocked exactly the same time, 44mins 26secs. Bogie came out on top because he had been faster than championship leader Girvan’s Subaru on the opening stage.
“That was a hell of a day,” Bogie admitted afterwards. “After we dropped time in the second stage we just threw caution to the wind and went for it. It’s a brilliant result.”
Irishman Phillip Morrow, making a one-off appearance, powered his Mitsubishi World Rally Car to overall victory ahead of the Ford Focus WRC of 2005 Scottish champ Dave Weston from Aberdeen.
But with neither registered for this year’s championship, Bogie collected maximum points by finishing third and leading Scottish-registered driver, with Girvan fourth.
