Double world GT delight for Fifer Kirkaldy

Fifer Andrew Kirkaldy powered his CR Scuderia Ferrari F430GT to a double victory in the latest round of the FIA World GT2 Championship on the streets of Bucharest.

After winning the 60-minute qualifying race on Saturday, overtaking the Ferrari of Jamie Davies’s Broxburn-based Scuderia Ecosse with 14 minutes remaining, Kirkaldy left his winning move till even later in today’s hour-long race.

With just four minutes remaining, the St Andrews racer speared past the leading AF Corse works’ Ferrari of Italian Gianmaria Bruni  to complete a memorable Romanian double.

“I’ve never experienced a race weekend like it,” Kirkaldy, who is also a director of the team and was partnered by Rob Bell in the race, admitted. “It was very hard out there today, even harder than yesterday because of the heat, but it was all worth it in the end.”

But while there was delight for Kirkaldy, there was frustration for Scuderia Ecosse. Having lost the lead with minutes remaining in Saturday’s qualifying race, Davies spun his Ferrari and finished a distant seventh. Today the team finished just off the podium in fourth.
