Fifer Jonathan Adam heads to Brands Hatch for the final double-header in the Seat Cupra Championship, in three weeks, on the verge of retaining his title after a weekend of extraordinary events at the latest rounds at Silverstone.
Starting the first race from pole position, but five points behind championship leader Robert Lawson, Adam was forced to pit at the end of the first lap after a coming together with the Yorkshireman’s car left him with a right-rear puncture.
While Lawson went on to win the race, the 26-year-old from Kirkcaldy finished a lap down in 13th. But there was further drama in the build-up to today’s second race.
While Adam lined up on pole again, Lawson was relegated to the back of the grid after scrutineers discovered a ‘technical irregularity’ on his car after qualifying. The Englishman was also docked 25 championship points.
Once the race started, contact with another car again pitched Adam on to the Northamptonshire grass. After rejoining in sixth, the young Scot battled back through the field to eventually claim his ninth win of the season by 1.460secs ahead of Andrew Herron.
“What a weekend,” Adam admitted. “It seemed liked everything that could happen, did happen. But amazingly, and what’s most important, is we won again and head to the final rounds leading the championship.”
As a result of Lawson managing to finish only seventh in the second race, allied to his 25-point penalty, Adam now takes a 17-point advantage to the final shoot-out in Kent on September 21.
The Scot is also within touching distance of the championship’s main prize, a paid-for drive in the British Touring Car Championship with Seat next season.
