Fifer Jonathan Adam clinched back-to-back Seat Cupra Championships when he claimed the two podium finishes he needed in the season’s final double-header at Brands Hatch in Kent.
The 26-year-old from Kirkcaldy, who dominated last year’s championship and was also crowned Renault Clio champ in 2006, finished second and third in today’s two races behind Martin Byford.
“It’s a fantastic achievement to not only win the championship but to do it two years in succession,” beamed Adam who won nine out of 12 races and finished 19 points ahead of runner-up Robert Lawson from Richmond.
“We started the season slowly because of problems we had with the car and soon found ourselves 55 points behind Robert. But the guys at Total Control Racing worked tirelessly on the car and once we got on a winning roll we slowly closed the gap.
“In many ways this championship is sweeter even than last year because I feel we’ve had to work harder. It really is a terrific feeling and is all down to everyone in the team.”
As part of his prize for lifting the championship, Adam will not only test a Seat British Touring Car next Monday but will also contest a round of the BTCC with full backing from Seat next season.
“I can’t wait,” Adam continued. “I know I’m fast and if I get a chance to run in a competitive car in the BTCC I’ll be able to run right up at the front and push for podiums and race wins. All I need is the opportunity to go racing.”
Meanwhile Italian Fabrizio Giovanardi won his second successive British Touring Car Championship for Vauxhall when he finished 14th in the opening round of today’s triple-header at Brands.
BMW’s Mat Jackson won the opening two races in his BMW. But it was a frustrating day for Dalgety Bay’s Gordon Shedden who had two ninths and a 13th, while the Scot’s Honda team-mate Tom Chilton won the season finale.
NB: Officially Adam’s Seat Cupra Championship win remains provisional until the outcome of an appeal by Robert Lawson — over his disqualification from qualifying at Silverstone — is heard in two weeks.
