TV boost for Scottish championships

The cream of Scotland’s young racing drivers have received a major boost with confirmation that the Scottish Motor Racing Club Championships at Knockhill will have extended television coverage.

The SMRC, which has Le Mans 24-Hour winner Allan McNish as its president, has signed a deal which will see Motors TV deliver extended and comprehensive coverage across Britain throughout the season.

With its mix of close racing, competitive pricing and full grids proving a hit with teams, drivers and fans alike, the burgeoning Scottish scene produced some of the best club action to be found anywhere in the UK last season.

The country’s showpiece championship, the Scottish Mini Cooper Cup, once again tops the bill. It will benefit from an hour of coverage for every one of its eight rounds which, in addition to Knockhill, include trips south of the border to Cadwell Park and across the Irish Sea to Kirkistown.

It’s joined by the Scottish Legends series, a championship for hot-rod lookalikes, plus the ever-popular Scottish Formula Ford 1600 and XR2 Fiesta campaigns. There will also be coverage of the Scottish and Classic Sports and Saloons championships.

“Over the last few years we’ve been concentrating on expanding our coverage of national and regional series,” Motors TV’s head of programming and acquisitions, Frederic Viger, said today.

“We found that last season’s Scottish motor racing content was particularly well received, mainly because it covers championships that would usually get little or no exposure.

“So successful was it in fact that we’ve decided to go down this same path again and expand our Scottish coverage for 2009 which represents a key piece in Motors TV’s ‘Best of British Motorsport’ jigsaw.”

This season’s television coverage kick-off with the Mini Cooper Cup on Wednesday, April 15, from 6pm.
