Edinburgh’s Oly Mortimer got his assault on the British Mini Championship off to a flying start when he claimed two wins in the opening triple-header at Rockingham in Northamptonshire.
The 24-year-old motor technician with Edinburgh’s Western VW, who had never even been to Rockingham before, won the opening round from fourth on the grid. An hour later he dominated the second race to win from pole position.
“It’s a fantastic way to start the year with my new team,” Mortimer, who leads the three-car
Formula International team, admitted today. “Two wins in the opening races was brilliant.
“In the final race, the top six places were reversed on the grid which meant I had to start sixth and I managed to battle through to finish second. And just for good measure I also managed to bag a couple of fastest laps as well.”
Such was Mortimer’s domination of the opening weekend in his Mark Fish Motorsport-prepared Mini Cooper S that he heads to the next triple-header at Brands Hatch in June leading the title race.
Mortimer is expected to graduate to the British Touring Car Championship next season as the Ellesmere Port-based Formula International team, owned by Liverpool-based businessman Steve James, continues its growth.
