One of the largest number of female racers ever to take part in a car race meeting happened on Sunday 28th June during the Scottish Motor Racing Club meeting. Five young female chargers took on their male counterparts at the Championship meeting in the Formula Ford, Scottish XR2 and Mini Cooper races.
The fastest girl racers were Knockhill Managing Director Jillian Shedden from Dalgety Bay and Carol Brown from Falkirk in their 140mph Formula Ford single seaters. Glasgow, and No 1 Magazine editor, Nadine Hawkins took to the track for the first ever time in the guest Mini along side Aberdeen’s Gemma Dreelan. Meanwhile completing the group of five was Fiona Wallace from Canoustie who raced in the fiercely competitive Ford XR2 class.

On the worlds stage Scotland’s own Susie Stoddard races with the best in the German Touring Cars and Danica Patrick has won in the Indy Cars in America, so it is great to see their amazing achievements being emulated here in Scotland too. Hopefully others will join in due course to help swell numbers. Carol’s achievements have been especially commendable as she became the first woman to win a Championship outright last year and won the top award from the Scottish Motor Racing Club as Scotland’s most promising driver of the year after her achievements in 2008”
