Steve Hislop, affectionately known as “Hizzy”, had 11 Isle of Man TT Victories to his credit. He also won the British 250cc title in 1990 and was twice British Superbike Champion. In addition, he was the first person to achieve an average speed of 120mph at the TT. That Steve was a hero to so many of us is hardly surprising.
Following his tragic death in a helicopter accident on 30th July 2003, very many people have paid tribute to the way in which he touched their lives. There are statues both in the Isle of Man and in his home town of Hawick, as well as a Steve Hislop exhibition in the Drumlanrig Tower Museum in Hawick.
One of the most fitting marks of respect is the annual Steve Hislop Tribute Motorcycle Run, organised by former Scottish Speed Champion, Alan Duffus. Each year, hundreds of motorcyclists from all over Scotland and other parts of the UK meet and ride to Denholm Green, Steve’s birthplace. This year, for the first time, the Run will call at Scotland’s National Motorsport Centre at Knockhill where, subject to timetable, the Scottish Motor Racing Club and the British GT Cup have kindly agreed to permit a two-lap Parade by the participants. Knockhill is an entirely appropriate venue for such an event, in that it was here that tens of thousands of his fans had the opportunity to watch Steve in action and to cheer him on.
