Franchitti beats Dixon to Homestead pole

Dario Franchitti edged one point closer to his IndyCar Championship rival and Ganassi team-mate, Scott Dixon, when he scorched to pole position for today’s season finale at Homestead in Florida.
The 36-year-old Scot, now just four points behind the Kiwi, clocked an average of 212.696mph on his four-lap qualifying run round the 1.5-mile oval to pip Dixon by 0.536mph.
Aussie Ryan Briscoe, the only other driver who can lift the title in today’s 200-lap shootout, starts third in his Penske after averaging 212.137mph.
“I was a bit concerned that being in the early qualifying group might handicap our chances of pole,” Franchitti admitted afterwards, “but the guys did a fantastic job preparing the car. All I had to do was keep my foot down and go for it.”
