Over 80 competitors turned out for the inaugural Knockhill Motor Sports Club bike race meeting today (Sunday 24th April).
Some familiar names were on the entry list and it was returning 2010 Scottish Championship winner Michael Robertson who stole the show, although Knockhill owner Derek Butcher did his best to steal his thunder. Robertson onboard a new Kawasaki ZX10R for the 2011 season leapt to the top of the Superbike class standings with a hattrick of victories today. And more importantly, takes the first step towards that end of season Motorpoint Yamaha test for the best Superbike rider.
Robertson however never had it all his on way and it was David Paton who marched into pole position in the mornings qualifying session. Bruce Birnie, Mike Keith and Donald MacFadyen pushed Robertson all the way but were unable to upset the Danderhall rider.
Elsewhere, Circuit owner, Derek Butcher rolled back the years to claim his first podium of the season on his return to racing after 23 years.
“I lasted raced a bike in 1988 at Beveridge Park almost 23 years ago. I surprised myself this morning by qualifying in 4th and hopefully I can hold that position or steal another.
“I’ve kind of got the ‘joy jitters’, on one hand l’m looking forward to it and on the other l’m a bit apprehensive. Once we start though, l’m sure l’ll be fine,” said Derek.
Knockhill Motor Sports Club chairman, Stuart Gray commented:
“That’s the first meeting done and dusted and credit to everyone for doing a fantastic job. Mind you… a red flag, on the first lap, of the first race did make my heart skip a beat but thankfully the meeting ran pretty smoothly.
“We’re certainly looking forward to the next meeting in two weeks and hopefully we can encourage a few more riders to participate.”
